Hyland Hill’s founding partners established the firm in 2020 based on 50 years of collective experience in investing in distressed credit and a strong conviction around a multi-year opportunity in distressed private loans. Our investment team has decades of experience investing in multiple credit cycles, strategies, assets and geographies.

Hyland Hill is a firm borne by our collective market experience, relationships, and strong conviction around our time-tested investment program.

We stick to our knitting and invest when Experience Meets Opportunity.

Our initial investment focus will center on distressed smaller balance loans where Hyland Hill believes it has a strong competitive advantage coupled with a tremendous market opportunity today and in the years to come.

Leadership Team

Jason Spaeth
Partner and Chief Investment Officer

Jason spent the vast majority of his career at Värde Partners where he was a Managing Partner working in its private credit strategies, investing in distressed business and household credit in North America and Europe. He opened and managed Värde’s European office in London in 2004 and oversaw Värde’s European private credit business until 2009. In 2008, Jason returned to the U.S. to lead Värde’s North American private credit business that invested approximately $5 billion following the Great Financial Crisis.

Prior to joining Värde in 1997, Jason worked in the banking industry at Northern Trust and Bank of America in Chicago.

Jason graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and English from Lawrence University in 1992 and a Master In Business Administration from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business in 1996.

Jeff Thuringer
Partner and Head of Business Loan Investments

Jeff was a Senior Managing Director and spent 15 years at Värde Partners from 2003 to 2018 and continued to consult for the firm until 2020. Jeff was senior member of a team that led Värde’s U.S. private credit business from 2009 to 2014. From 2014 until 2018, Jeff helped lead the formation of Värde’s Scratch and Dent Fund and managed all aspects of the portfolio. Prior to 2009, Jeff was a Managing Director on Värde’s corporate trading desk and represented Värde’s interest on creditor committees and on board of directors.

Prior to Värde, Jeff spent 5 years in commercial banking with his most recent experience as a commercial banker at U.S. Bank.

Jeff graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from the University of South Dakota. He received his MBA from the University of Minnesota, Carlson School of Business in 2005. He earned his CFA designation in 2002 and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) (inactive).

Chris Giles
Partner and Head of Household Loan Investing

Chris Giles has over 25 years of investing experience. Since 2017, he has been a Partner in Total Card Funding I, LLC (“Total Card”), a non-prime U.S. consumer credit card business. In this role, Mr. Giles monitors portfolio performance and oversees its $100 million financing facility with a large, global asset manager.

Prior to Total Card, Mr. Giles served as a Senior Managing Director at Värde. He spent 15 years at Värde from 2002 to 2017 and was a senior member of a team that led Värde’s U.S. private credit business that invested approximately $5 billion from 2009 to 2014 primarily in Distressed Private Loans. Mr. Giles spent the majority of his time at Värde managing the household investment business in North America that specialized in consumer and residential mortgage loan transactions.

Mr. Giles graduated from the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor of Science in Finance in 1992. He also earned his Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation in 2003.
